Green Resolutions for 2009

New Years Resolution Calvin and Hobbes

Your New Year’s resolutions can be good for yourself and for the environment too.  Here are some ideas for steps we can resolve to take that can have a positive impact!

#1. Walk, cycle, bus it, and if you have to drive – take less trips and carpool if possible.  Great for your health, great for the planet, and saves money too!

2 – Buy local and organic.  Local food doesn’t have to be trucked as far to the grocery store and so has a lighter carbon footprint than exotic food.   Get to know what is in season and plan your meals around it.   Organic farming avoids the use of pesticides and herbicides.  Remember to put your reusable grocery bags in your purse or somewhere else easy to remember!

3 – Bring your own mug, thermos or bottle of water.  ‘Nuff said.

4 – Green the house.  Use cloth towels and napkins instead of paper.  Make recycling easy for everyone by having a system.  Use non-toxic cleaning products.  Unplug electronics easily by plugging them into a power bar and switch off all at once,  put your computer on a power saver setting.  Turn off the lights.  Put on a sweater!

5 – Share.  Sharing is nice and if we share our resources, more can benefit from less stuff.  A car ride shared by four people means three fewer cars on the road.  Sharing cars, jobs, tools, babysitting, etc. all can make practical and economic sense, can save time and have less impact on the environment too!

6 – Cook More. Eat out less, eat from the outside of the market (the fresh, non processed stuff).  Pack a lunch to work, and snacks!

7 – Go online.  Reduce paper and mail by changing to online banking, bill paying and direct deposit for your paycheck.

8 – Dress sustainably.  Buy quality pieces you love and take care of clothing so it will look great longer.  Wash fabrics gently, with cold water.  Lift the lid of the washer to give clothes an extra soak before rinsing.  Hang up to dry when possible.  Don’t use dryer sheets

9 – Green your beauty routine.  Choose organicRead labels and learn about ingredients in products you apply to your body.

10 – Be a good example.  Show others how to live happy, healthy low impact lives by doing it yourself.  Pay it forward – get help when you need it and give it to others when you can.

Maybe you are already doing all this stuff and have some other resolutions you are working on?  Share  your ideas and we can all learn from them!

Happy Healthy 2009!

Del Forte Denim : Eco-Luxury Feels Good!

Del Forte Calla Jeans

Del Forte Denim is designed for the eco-chic woman who is transforming the face of fashion. Made in the USA with 100 percent organic cotton, Del Forte’s premium denim apparel is part of a growing trend which interprets luxury as a combination of distinctive design and ethical production.

The garments are sewn and finished in Los Angeles, a fashion-forward city that is a leader in anti-sweatshop legislation and enforcement, as well as being home to the most cutting-edge wash development facilities in the country.” from Del Forte Denim

Fitness Travel Gear and their sister blog Fancy Green have excellent reviews of organic and sustainable fashions made of cotton, denim, silk, bamboo, soy …

Here’s an excerpt of a review of Del Forte’s Calla Jeans from Fitness Travel Gear:

A good pair of jeans speaks for itself. Unfortunately, too many jeans try too hard, relying on fluffy adornments or bizarre styling to catch your attention. But we know better; it’s not about the bling, it’s about the fit. And the fabric.

Del Forte’s Calla jeans are confident, simple, and straight-forward. They actually remind me of my favorite pair of Levis, and preserve many of the “original” jean’s design elements such as pocket rivets and a clean, straight-leg cut. The Calla has left a few subtle marks on this blueprint, contrast stitching on the pocket and two small embroidered logos (one on the waistband, top right, of course) and one on the inside panel of the zippered fly.

I knew the minute I pulled my Calla jeans out of the box that these were no ordinary jeans, despite their low-key appearance. The organic denim is soft like velvet. They actually feel creamy to the touch, especially after washing. I love the low-rise cut, but since not everybody does, Del Forte makes these jeans in a medium-rise, too, which is plenty modest for anyone. I also love the long, straight/skinny tapered leg, and the slightly stretchy fit. The longer I wear them, they give more and fit like a glove. I never thought I’d give up my baggy jeans–I’ll still keep them for working around the house –but I’m a pretty serious convert at this point. I’m never going back to wearing men’s jeans..”
